Can You Use AirPods for Pitch Calling?

Yes. AirPods and any Bluetooth earbuds work with app-based pitch calling systems. Which models work best and tips for using them on the field.

Can You Use AirPods for Pitch Calling?

Yes. If you use an app-based pitch calling system like The Headset App, AirPods work perfectly. So do any other Bluetooth earbuds. Hardware radio systems require proprietary receivers and cannot use AirPods or any consumer earbuds.

Which AirPods Work Best?

Any model works, but some are better suited for the field than others.
  • AirPods Pro. The best option for most catchers. Active noise cancellation helps block crowd noise. The silicone ear tips provide a secure fit that stays in place during play.
  • AirPods (standard). Work fine for pitch calling. The open-ear design means more ambient noise gets in, which some catchers actually prefer because they can still hear the batter, umpire, and coaches. Less secure fit than the Pro model.
  • AirPods Max. Over-ear headphones. Not practical for catching or field use.

What About Other Bluetooth Earbuds?

The Headset App works with any Bluetooth earbuds. Not just AirPods. Common options coaches and catchers use include:
  • Samsung Galaxy Buds
  • Beats Fit Pro (popular for sports because of the wing tip fit)
  • Jabra Elite
  • Bose Sport Earbuds
  • JBL, Skullcandy, and other budget-friendly options ($20 to $40)
The brand does not matter. If they connect to your phone via Bluetooth, they work with The Headset App.

Tips for Using Earbuds on the Field

  • Use one earbud only. Most catchers wear a single earbud in one ear and leave the other ear open. This lets them hear the pitch call while still hearing the umpire, coaches, and game sounds.
  • Choose earbuds with a secure fit. Silicone tips or wing tips stay in better than smooth hard-shell earbuds. Look for sport-oriented models if your catcher moves a lot behind the plate.
  • Keep a backup pair in the equipment bag. Earbuds are small. They get lost. A $30 backup pair in the bag means a lost earbud never becomes a game-day crisis.
  • Charge before the game. Most Bluetooth earbuds last 4 to 8 hours on a single charge. More than enough for any game. Just make sure they are charged before first pitch.

Why This Matters

One of the biggest advantages of app-based pitch calling is that it works with equipment your players already own. Most catchers already have AirPods or some pair of Bluetooth earbuds. There is nothing new to buy, charge, distribute, or collect after the game. With hardware radio systems, the catcher wears a proprietary receiver that only works with that specific platform. If it breaks, you order a replacement from the manufacturer for $200 to $400 and wait for delivery. If an earbud breaks, you buy a new pair at any store for $30 to $50. The Headset App offers a free trial with no credit card required. Test it with whatever earbuds you already own.
