High School Compliance & The Headset App.
In 2023, “coach-to-catcher-only” one-way communications became legal. This rule allows only for a coach in the dugout to communicate one-way to his catcher on the field of play. It is important coaches and teams understand these rules. To learn more, check out this page that provides a detailed look at the ruling.
Direct Audio Compliance
Committee Ruling: 1.6.2 SITUATION 5: “The catcher is wearing a one-way electronic communication device with an earpiece but no microphone. The coach in the dugout is relaying to the catcher the next pitch the coach wants the pitcher to deliver. RULING: This is legal. (1-6-2)” Further clarification: “Earpiece may NOT have microphone IN catcher’s physical earbud.”
Outcome: Wired earbuds with no mic are the ONLY compliant earbud option for catchers in 2025 season.
