Do You Need Special Equipment for Electronic Pitch Calling in Softball?

Best Pitch Calling System 20
No special equipment needed for softball. The Headset App uses a phone plus earbuds or a smartwatch you already own. Here's what to check.
No. You do not need special equipment for electronic pitch calling in softball. The Headset App runs on a phone and works with Bluetooth earbuds or a smartwatch you already own, so a coach can send calls to the circle without buying a proprietary transmitter or receiver.

What you actually need

The setup is gear most softball programs already have.
  • A phone for the coach in the dugout
  • Bluetooth earbuds (AirPods, Powerbeats, or similar) or an in-helmet speaker for the player receiving the call
  • Optional: a smartwatch, which some levels prefer for a one-way notification
In Solo Mode, one phone and one earbud are enough to start sending calls.

The spec that matters on the field

The one thing worth checking is Bluetooth class. Earbuds with Class 1 Bluetooth hold a clear connection across a softball diamond, easily covering the distance from the dugout to the circle or the plate with a line of sight from the phone. Our hardware guide lists earbuds and watches that have been game-tested for range.

How this compares to hardware systems

Proprietary systems ship devices you charge, hand out, collect, and replace when they are lost or broken. A phone-based setup uses devices you already charge daily, and a lost earbud costs a fraction of a lost receiver. For the full picture across levels, see our pitch calling cost breakdown.

Start with what you own

Download the app, pair the earbuds you already have, and send your first call in Solo Mode. It is free to start, and you can add licenses and a channel later when you want full open-voice communication with your staff. If you still need to set up your calls, see how to build a pitch call menu for softball.

Frequently asked questions

Do we need a special earpiece?

No. Any Bluetooth earbud works. A small earbud strap keeps it secure under a helmet or mask.

Is a smartwatch required?

No. A smartwatch is optional. Some setups use one for a compliant one-way notification, but earbuds alone are enough to hear the call.
